External Restoration Project

Here at The Scotch Whisky Experience, our historic B-listed building has now been fully restored following a £750,000 investment for a major external building maintenance project.

Having had scaffolding on both the front on Castlehill and rear of the building on Johnston Terrace over the last few months, it’s great to see our significant investment has paid off with The Scotch Whisky Experience now restored to its full glory.

What work has been carried out?

Following a full site survey by construction consultants, Thomson Gray, we contracted BD Roofing to carry out the works.  The entire building has now been repointed with cement pointing which had been used previously, being replaced with traditional lime pointing.

General stone repairs and replacements have been carried out including the Bullseye window, the individual lettering spelling out ‘Castlehill School’ on the façade, as well as giving us the opportunity to preserve our two unicorn figures, originally crafted in the 1800’s, from sandstone from the Corncockle quarry.

The balcony to the exterior of our Blender’s Room on the top floor has been beautifully refurbished using traditional lead work, future-proofing it for years to come. We had been experiencing an unidentified intermittent leak to which we could not find the source in our historic Castlehill Room. The scale of these works has given us the access necessary to completely re-slate the problem section of the roof.

Joinery work has been carried out on window frames and new glazing installed.

This project represents a major investment in the restoration of our building’s exterior, bringing together numerous specialists and highly skilled craftsmen to return our B-listed property to the standard it so richly deserves. Visitors can now enjoy not only a five-star experience inside, but also a five-star welcome from the beautifully renewed exterior.

Located within a UNESCO world heritage site, we are proud that our building now looks so smart, for the many tourists and passers-by alike to enjoy, and is fit for water the Scottish weather throws at us for the decades to come.
