Bookspeed

In a big blue warehouse in Edinburgh’s Leith district, you’ll find a busy team lovingly packing boxes full of books to be shipped to retail customers across the UK. The books have been hand-picked by in-house experts to complement the themes, products and interior design of the retailers who will receive them.

This is Bookspeed which was founded in a small Edinburgh office in 1986 by Annie Rhodes and Kingsley Dawson who had an idea to create a next-day UK-wide books wholesale delivery service and a vision to build a progressive and inclusive workplace. Annie and Kingsley soon identified they could do more. Bookspeed began to offer retailers more than just the delivery of books, but a service that carefully curates book ranges for its customers, drawing on Annie and Kingsley’s deep knowledge of the publishing sector and market trends.

Three outdoor themed books placed on a wooden table with a map of Scotland, film camera, flask and binoculars.

Now, Bookspeed is still a family affair led by Lewis Dawson, who joined the business in 2008. Headquartered in Salamander Yards, Leith, and operating from two warehouse sites, a team of more than 50 provides book ranges to around 2,000 retailers from sectors including heritage, gift and lifestyle, e-commerce, and home and garden. Despite constant evolution, Bookspeed’s core principles have never strayed far from Annie and Kingsley’s original values-based vision of inclusivity and customer service excellence.
