In 1844, James Whyte and Charles Mackay wanted to provide the residents of Glasgow with an alternative to Cognac. They created their ‘Special’ blend, which was a combination of 35 malt whiskies from each of Scotland’s four regions.
Since the very early days Whyte and Mackay has been synonymous with the two red lions on the label. During the 14th century Clan Macgregor’s lands were taken over by the Campbell’s, leaving the Macgregor’s outlawed and landless. Almost 300 years later, in the 17th century, the Macgregor’s were chastised even further by being forced to adopt a new surname, on pain of death, with many of the clan members assuming the name Whyte. It’s said that one lion on Whyte and Mackay’s label comes from the Macgregor clan’s crest, whilst the other represents the Scottish lion rampant.
Whyte and Mackay have always treated their whisky with special care, to the extent that even their core blend is triple matured. The standard maturation of the individual single malts comes first; these are then married together in sherry casks and matured for another few months. The aged grain whisky is then added, and the whole blend is matured for a little bit longer. 41 different whiskies are now carefully selected and mixed by Master Blender, Richard Paterson, to create Whyte and Mackay’s ‘Special’ blend.
