Community, charities and CSR at SWE
We’ve been hard at work on our corporate social responsibility this summer – what might sound like just another buzzword has been great for inspiring the team here at the Scotch Whisky Experience, and hearing their ideas and input has been fantastic, thinking up more ways that the business can have a positive impact on the world around us. Here’s what we’ve been up to…
Carry it forward
We recently presented a cheque for £1,000 to the team who run the Grassmarket Community Project (just a 10 minute walk from the Scotch Whisky Experience), which will go towards the outreach projects for local vulnerable people. Finance Director Tony Dick and Head of Marketing Julie Trevisan-Hunter had a fascinating morning with the GCP team learning about the different programmes they’re working on, and how the money we raised will help.
In Scotland we are blessed with excellent sanitation and plenty of clear fresh water which is of course one of the fundamental ingredients of Scotch whisky. So we’ve been working with ToiletTwinning.org to support their projects in developing countries where basic sanitation is still something that residents can’t take for granted – 1 in 3 people worldwide still don’t have a loo! The Scotch Whisky Experience toilet is now twinned with that of a school block in Sana, in the Port Loko District of Sierra Leone, helping to raise awareness and support of a necessity that many people take for granted. The Scotch Whisky Experience is located in the eighteenth century ‘Castlehill School’ so we are delighted to twin with a school through this initiative.

Since the carrier bag charge came into force in the UK back in 2014, we’ve been collecting the 5p we charge for each carrier bags in our Whisky Shop for charity. We recently held a draw to determine which charities we would be supporting via both the 5p bag charge and the charity collection tins that we keep at the till in the Whisky Shop. Our team have had some great ideas for charities we can donate this money to, and it’s been inspiring to hear about the different connections that members of the team have to different causes. Over the coming months, we’ll be donating proceeds from the charity tins together with the bag charge to the following organisations:
Donations to these important organisations are always welcome – whatever loose or spare change you might have, in whatever currency, it is always much appreciated.
